NSF CISE RE Workshop
NSF CISE Research Expansion (RE) Aspiring PI Workshop | FIU | Dec 18-19, 2025
Florida International University is hosting the NSF CISE RE Aspiring PI Workshop at the Earlene and Albert Dotson Pavilion at Florida International University (FIU) on December 18-19, 2025. The National Science Foundation's (NSF) Directorate for Computer and Information Science and Engineering (CISE) Research Expansion program aims to:
- Broaden participation by increasing the number of CISE-funded research projects from new Principal Investigators (PIs) and early career PIs at non-R1 Universities.
- Develop research capacity toward successful submissions to core CISE programs.
Developing research expertise at all institutions is central to inclusive excellence, fostering innovation, cultivating current and future undergraduate and graduate CISE talent, and bolstering long-term US competitiveness. The workshop will bring together researchers, both funded PIs and aspiring PIs, for the CISE Future Computing Research (Future CoRe)-focused programs.
The events will provide a platform for participants to meet at large, share research insights, identify challenges and opportunities, and initiate potential research collaborations with the objective of submitting CISE Future CoRe proposals starting in the 2026 competition. The workshops will pursue four major objectives: 1) Community building: strengthen relationships among Artificial Intelligence (AI), Cybersecurity, and Quantum Computing, among other CISE priority areas; 2) Cross-learning: facilitate knowledge sharing, best practices exchanges, and preparing aspiring PIs to leverage success and enhance proposal development skills; 3) Mentoring Program (MP): provide each research team experienced coaching; 4) Collaboration development: foster new collaborations, explore future opportunities to advance research initiatives, and prepare collaborative proposals towards CISE Future CoRe programs.
These objectives will provide robust scaffolding to new and early career researchers to develop team performance and proposal competitiveness competencies through facilitating ideation, team building, instruction, review, and mentoring. The workshop program will comprise informational presentations by NSF Program Directors and invited speakers, alongside breakout sessions for aspiring PIs such as brainstorming sessions, mentor/mentee sessions, and lightning talk sessions.
Participants will receive a stipend to cover or defray the cost of travel, meals, and lodging.
